DC Aggie BBQ This Sunday!

Attending the Aggie BBQ? We hope so! It's this coming Sunday, August 1 at Castle Park, Ft. Belvoir, August 1st from 1-5pm, rain or shine.    Tickets are $10 for members, $25 for non-members, and $5 for kids under 12. Lots of food, drink & fun! See the very bottom of this email for directions to Ft. Belvoir.

Call for volunteers:

We plan to have the DC club officers and a BBQ volunteer team out early Sunday to set-up. Due to expected large crowd this year (est 300+) we have a large logistical effort ahead of us. Anyone who could come out early and join the BBQ volunteer team to set-up would be a big help and we would be very grateful in your part in making this a memorable event.

Directions to Ft. Belvoir

Most people in DC/NoVa and Md will be taking I-95 South:

    * Traveling south on I95, take the Fairfax Parkway/Backlick Road (7100) exit 166A.
    * Take the Fairfax County Parkway to its end at US Rt. 1 (Richmond Highway.)
    * Turn left on Rt. 1.
    * At the first light, turn right on Pohick Rd. to get to the entrance for Tulley Gate of Fort Belvoir.   Be prepared to show photo ID for everyone in your vehicle. If asked, say you're going to the Texas A&M Alumni BBQ event at Castle Park.

Once you're past Tulley Gate, you'll see signs for Castle Park (less than 2 miles south of Tulley Gate, near the waterfront of Gunston Cove) and we will have Aggies on the Fort looking out for fellow Aggies.

Happy Hour This Friday With Fellow Texans!

This Thursday, July 22, 7-10pm for Aggie Howdy Hour we're partnering with TCU, The University of Texas, SMU, and Texas Tech for a Texas Universities Young Professionals Alumni Mixer. It will be at George - in the courtyard, 3251 Prospect Street, NW, Washington DC. Over 60 Aggies have signed up!

Scholarship Endowment

Last year, the National Capital Texas A&M Club (NCTAMC) began the process of working towards an endowment. Texas A&M University Association of Former Students allows organizations who are recognized by the university to apply for an endowment. Having an endowment provides the organization with guaranteed funding every year. The NCTAMC must raise at least $25,000 dollars in order to officially obtain the endowment, which will return back 4% of the total endowment amount annually.

Every year, the NCTAMC awards a $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding student living in the DC metroplex area who has either just been accepted to Texas A&M or currently attending Texas A&M. It is common practice for us to raise the money every year for the scholarship, but this limits us in how many scholarships we could potentially award. Because we want to significantly help more students financially, it is a goal of the NCTAMC to raise the $25,000 as soon as possible. The endowment will ensure that at least one student will definitely receive some type of financial assistance that is significant in covering college expenses, and it will also provide us with an opportunity to increase the number of scholarship winners.

As your fellow Aggies, we ask that you please thoughtfully consider donating whatever you can to the endowment fund. Any dollar amount donated is a step closer to helping someone else indefinitely. Once the endowment is established, it becomes self-sufficient, always continuing to award scholarships to students even if the NCTAMC were to become non-existent.

You will be hearing more about the endowment throughout the course of the year, and you will also have many opportunities to donate to this great cause. A Call for Volunteers:

One of the goals for the DC Aggies in 2010 is to enlarge our outreach presence in the local DC community through activities and partnerships with charities, service groups and non-profit organizations. As a new and significant focus area for the club we are seeking your help to get this initiative off the ground. Over the next 45 days we will be forming a DC Aggies Community Outreach Committee to help brainstorm ideas, establish new relationships, and plan Club outreach events up to and including a planned “Big Event” this fall. We are looking for anyone interested in joining this committee or who can participate in any capacity. In addition we are looking for somebody who has a particular passion for this work who would be willing to become our Outreach Chairperson for 2010. This Saturday, March 20th join the National Capital Texas A&M Club in our 2nd Annual Endowment Fundraiser- the Maroon and White Wine Tasting event. The event will feature a variety of reds and whites and a fabulous spread of cheeses and other food! The event is $20 and all the proceeds go to the National Capital Texas A&M Club Endowment.

The event will be located at the North Arlington Condominium, 1050 North Stuart Street in Arlington Virginia, 22201 --Just off the Ballston Metro. The main entrance faces the courtyard. Before entering the building, turn and walk down the left side of the building to the party room entrance. There will be balloons and flyers up to direct you.

3) Howdy Hour and the Wil Gravatt Band! – 25 March

Join the DC Aggies on March 25, 2010 for a Howdy Hour at the Tune Inn (331 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Capitol South) at 6:30 p.m. and then join us as we head over to the American Legion (224 D Street SE, Capitol South) for some great country music, courtesy of the Wil Gravatt Band! Fellow Aggies Kelsey Walker and Jonathan Balmos will be teaching two step for those that need a refresher, or for friends who may never have learned. Lessons are free.

4) Wreath Laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – 21 April

The National Capital Texas A&M Club will be honoring our fallen Aggies by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on April 21, 2010 and we invite you to come and share in this solemn tradition with us. The ceremony will begin promptly at 12:15pm. We advise that you arrive no later than 12:00pm so the ceremony will not be interrupted.

Dress is business casual. Parking is available at the cemetery for $1.75 an hour. Guests can also arrive via the Arlington Cemetery stop on the Blue Line.

5) Aggie Muster – 21 April

Muster is quickly approaching; you should have gotten an official invitation from the Association of Former Students with the date and time of our ceremony. We will be conducting our second annual silent auction at this year's Muster. The proceeds will go towards the DC Aggies Scholarship endowment. Dallas Stars, DC Aggies, Longhorns
On March 8th at 7pm the Dallas Stars will face off against the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center and the DC Aggies will be in the stands. Join the National Capital Texas A&M Club to watch the game, and afterwards to cheer on or play as we take on the DC tsips in a game of broomball. Tickets to the game are $46.50. The broomball team is limited to 10 Aggies, the first ten to sign up will be on the team. If you are interested in playing choose the 'player' ticket, if you are interested in being a fan, chose the 'fan' ticket.

Monday night, it's Reveille vs. UGA as the Ags take on the Bulldogs in the Independence bowl. The game starts at 5 pm, so join your fellow DC Aggies to watch Texas A&M BTHO Georgia from the comfort of the Grand Slam Bar and Grill.

Grand Slam is a family friendly smoke free sports bar and restaurant and they are offering a bucket of 5 Shiner Bock beers for $15. Their address is 1000 H Street NW in Washington, DC and they are on the lower level of the Grand Hyatt hotel, halfway between the Metro Center and Chinatown metro stations.

Join the DC Aggies at the November Howdy Hour before the Texas State Society's Terlingua Two-Step. We'll be at Liberty Tavern (3195 Wilson Boulevard) at 6:30 p.m. and then head over to Terlingua at Clarendon Ballroom next door.

2) Football Season Wrap-Up

The NCTAMC would like to extend a thank you to all of you who continued to show up week after week to watch our Aggies. Although we may not have had the best season, the generosity of the club has been overwhelming. This season we raised 848 dollars selling Blue Bell ice cream and NCTAMC t-shirts. As I mentioned throughout the season, all of the money raised will go towards funding our scholarship and our endowment. For those of you who do not know, every year the club raises money to fund a scholarship to give to a deserving Aggie from the National Capital Region. In addition to raising money for the scholarship, we are also trying to raise $5,000 this year for the endowment. The ultimate goal over the next five years is to raise $25,000 for the endowment. The NCTAMC is a non-profit organization and all donations to the club are tax deductible. 3) Aggie Basketball is Here

The Aggie Men's basketball team is 3-0 this season after beatingthe SMU Mustangs 80-68 this week in Dallas. Our nationally ranked women's team took on No. 6 ranked Duke and defeated them 95-77 in season opener. Looks like the Aggies are going to have a great basketball season... stay tuned for more information on possible Aggie Basketball game watching parties! Whoop!

Our Aggie Football Team is 5-4 and one game away from bowl eligibility.

Saturday November 14, our Aggies will BTHO Oklahoma at 7pm and the DC Aggies will be at the Grand Slam starting at 6:30pm to watch together.

The club will be selling Blue Bell ice cream for $3 or Blue Bell ice cream sundaes for $5 and NCTAMC t-shirts for $10 at the game watching party to raise money for our scholarship program and endowment. As always, we thank you for your support!

Our Aggie Football Team is 5-3 and one game away from bowl eligibility.

This Saturday, November 7 at 1pm, join your fellow DC Aggies to watch Texas A&M BTHO Colorado from the comfort of the Grand Slam Bar and Grill.

A week later, Saturday November 14, our Aggies will BTHO Oklahoma at 7pm and the DC Aggies will be at the Grand Slam starting at 6:30pm to watch together.

Grand Slam is a family friendly smoke free sports bar and restaurant. Grand Slam is offering 5 Shiner Bock beers in a bucket for $15. In addition, they will also be taking $2 off each appetizer on game night!

The club will be selling Blue Bell ice cream for $3 or Blue Bell ice cream sundaes for $5 and NCTAMC t-shirts for $10 at the game watching party to raise money for our scholarship program and endowment. As always, we thank you for your support!

The generosity of Aggies has been absolutely incredible this year. In the past two weeks, we have raised $431 at the game watching parties selling t-shirts and Blue Bell ice cream. We want to thank you for the overwhelming support, and let everyone know that every cent of money we raise goes directly towards the scholarship and the endowment. We have a long way to go before we reach $6,000 at the end of April, but we know with the support and generosity of this club, this goal is absolutely obtainable. Aggie Football Season has arrived.... the Ags looked good in our season opener against New Mexico. The first televised game will be against Arkansas on October 3. The game time and scheduled kickoff have not been announced, but there will be Shiner Bock beer and Blue Bell ice cream at the Grand Slam sports bar at the Hyatt located on 1000 H St NW.

4) NCTAMC Scholarship Announcement

On behalf of the Scholarship Committee, I am pleased to announce the 2009-2010 NCTAMC Scholarship Recipient, Alan Tamplen ’13. Alan will soon depart to College Station for Freshman Orientation Week for the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, Company B-Battery. Alan plans to study in the College of Engineering and will pursue a military contract for the United States Marine Corps where he aspires to fly Harriers. Alan and his family live in Charlestown, West Virginia where Alan was active in his church, wrestled on the Varsity team, and in the Boys Scouts of American he achieved the highest rank, Eagle Scout.

Thank you to all of our applicants, we truly appreciated reading your applications and look forward to next year’s application.

Several people asked me at BBQ about donations to the Scholarship and the Endowment. If you would like to make a donation or learn how you can get involved with the Scholarship Committee, please do not hesitate to contact me.

5) CAN Flag Football

Fellow DC Aggies are participating in another flag football season with CAN (Capital Alumni Network).

This is a no contact, flag league that plays on weekends only, from 8am to 3pm at Anacostia Park. The 2009 season will run from 9/12 to 12/12, and all A&M Former Students are welcome to join as we BTHO our division opponents: Emory, Maryland, Penn State, Richmond, and t.u.

Please join us for an afternoon of family fun at Ft. Belvoir-- bring your friends, family and co-workers to the annual National Capital A&M Club's Saw 'Em Off BBQ!

We will have some activities for the kids, some dominoes for 42, and plenty of food and fun for the whole family.

If you are a current member of the National Capital A&M Club, BBQ is free!! For non members, the cost will be $20 payable by cash, check or PayPal and comes with a complimentary membership to our club!

Transportation:

The park is approximately 5 miles from the Franconia-Springfield Metro (Blue Line). If you will be “Metro-ing” and need a ride to the park, please contact Kelli Use, kellilynnuse@gmail.com or 202.297.1000, before you depart and once you arrive at the Metro station. She will be happy to arrange transportation from the Metro.

The following are directions from Route 1:

From Route 1 South turn left towards Ft. Belvoir on Backlick Road and enter through Tulley Gate. Please have proper government issued identification ready for security. Additionally, please do not talk on your cell phone while driving on Post unless you have an ear piece, and please make sure you watch for posted speed limit signs.

Once you enter from Tully Gate, you will turn right on Theote, just after thrift shop/archery center/vet clinic sign. Please look for A&M Club BBQ signs as well. You will pass RV/Boat Storage on your left, and at the stop sign, turn right on Warren. You will continue driving until you come to the "T" in the road, and finally, turn left on Johnson. Parking is available on your right.

As a reminder, current members (those who renewed their membership en lieu of expiration, April 29th 2009) are welcome to enjoy BBQ free of charge. Non-members or those who have not renewed will be charged $20, and will receive a club membership.
